  1. HP PC ARPA and Network Services for MS-DOS, MicroSoft(r) LAN MANAGER,
  2. and NetWare(r) Technical Data

  4. HP PC ARPA and Network Services provide a PC running MS-DOS with
  5. HP ARPA Services to host computers in a multivendor environment and
  6. HP Network Services to HP minicomputers. HP PC ARPA and Network Services
  7. run on MicroSoft(r) LAN Manager 2.1 and 2.1a, NetWare(r) ODI and NDIS,
  8. and standalone clients. This product also supports the Windows 3.X
  9. environment in all modes.
  10.   Note: The J2246A product combines the following products:
  11.     HP Network Services 2.1/MS-DOS (D1811B), HP ARPA Services
  12.     2.1/MS-DOS (D1812B), HP Network Services 2.1 for Netware
  13.     (D1819A), and HP ARPA Services 2.1 for Netware (D1823A).

  15. For specifics on supported NDIS and ODI card drivers refer to the
  16. Product Requirements section.

  18. HP Network Services provide a PC running MS-DOS with Network File
  19. Transfer (NFT), Terminal Access, and Network Interprocess Communication
  20. (NetIPC) to HP minicomputers. These services supply a complete and
  21. sophisticated set of communication facilities between the PC and the
  22. minicomputer, complementing MicroSoft's(r) LAN Manager and Novell's
  23. NetWare solutions. Also, PROBE is provided for HP 3000 Resource Sharing
  24. connectivity for MicroSoft(r) LAN Manager 2.1 TCP/IP clients.
  25.    With HP ARPA Services a PC running MS-DOS can communicate in a
  26. multivendor environment using the networking services defined by the
  27. Department of Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA) and
  28. Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) UNIX(r) system.

  30. Features and Benefits of the ARPA Services
  31.  
  32. o File Transfer (FTP, MIL-STD 1780)
  33.  
  34. FTP is a family of commands for performing file and directory operations
  35. over the network.  You can get or put files to a remote computer, using
  36. either ASCII or binary transfers.  File transfers to HP 9000, HP 1000,
  37. HP 3000, Sun, DEC VAX and IBM machines are supported.
  38.  
  39. o Virtual Terminal (TELNET, MIL-STD 1782)
  40.  
  41. Teletype Network Protocol (TELNET) lets you use your local PC as a
  42. terminal to another computer on the network.  The remote computer can be
  43. running UNIX or another operating system.  A public-domain VT100
  44. terminal emulator (Kermit) is included with this TELNET product. TELNET
  45. also supports HP AdvanceLink for DOS, HP AdvanceLink for Windows /
  46. NewWave, and compatible third party terminal emualtors.

  48. o Berkeley Remote Commands (rcp, rsh)
  49.  
  50. Remote UNIX file copy (rcp) lets you copy files to or from your PC with
  51. a UNIX node over the network.  Single files or whole directories can be
  52. copied in this way.  Remote shell (rsh) lets you execute a command on a
  53. remote UNIX host.

  55. o Berkeley Sockets Run Time Development Support
  56.  
  57. Berkeley Sockets run time application support is included.  Berkeley
  58. Sockets run time support, using the sockets interface provided with the
  59. HP PC Sockets Developer's Kit (D1827A), allow developers to create a
  60. program running on their PC that can communicate with a peer process
  61. running on another machine on the network.  The Sockets Developer's Kit
  62. allows developers to create distributed Sockets applications in either
  63. the DOS or the Windows 3.0 and 3.1 environments.
  64.    Note: The D1827A product is orderable by phoning 1-800-848-9283 or
  65.          303-353-7650 outside the U.S.
  66.          This product only supports development to HP's sockets
  67.          interface.

  69. Features and Benefits of Network Services
  70.  
  71. o Network File Transfer (NFT)
  72.  
  73. Network File Transfer allows a PC to transfer a file to or from an HP
  74. 3000, HP 9000, or HP 1000, or initiate a transfer between any two of
  75. these computers.  The NFT operation uses the dscopy command, which can
  76. be issued from the keyboard or from within a program.

  78. o Terminal Access (VT)
  79.  
  80. Terminal Access provides a PC user with terminal access over the network
  81. to HP 3000s as if the PC were directly connected to the minicomputer.
  82. This terminal access uses HP Advance- Link for DOS, HP AdvanceLink for
  83. Windows / NewWave, and compatible third party terminal emulators.

  85. o Network Interprocess Communication (NetIPC)
  86.  
  87. The NetIPC application program interface is fully supported by HP NS
  88. Services. With these interfaces, a number of distributed applications
  89. can use the processor power of the PC and the HP 3000, HP 9000, or HP
  90. 1000.

  94. o Supports Industry Standard TCP/IP Transport
  95.  
  96. Standards allow users to interoperate with other TCP/IP systems.

  98. o Internetting Support
  99.  
  100. This support allows PC users to access hosts locally on the network as
  101. well as remotely using the TCP/IP transport through routers and
  102. gateways.  This allows users to access hosts anywhere in a TCP/IP based
  103. network.

  105. o Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 and 2.1a support
  106.  
  107. Both Services run on LM 2.1 clients and also provides HP3000 Resource
  108. Sharing connectivity for Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 TCP/IP clients. PC
  109. clients can operate on Ethernet, Ethertwist (10BaseT), StarLAN10,
  110. and Token Ring based networks. (Refer to Product Requirements Section
  111. for NDIS drivers and cards supported.)

  113. o Netware 2.15c or later support
  114.  
  115. Both Services run on Netware clients using NDIS or ODI MAC drivers. All
  116. ODI drivers must be ODINSUP compatible.  PC clients can operate on
  117. Ethernet, Ethertwist (10BaseT), and Token Ring based networks. (Refer
  118. to Product Requirements Section for ODI drivers and cards supported.)

  206. The Netware clients must have NDIS or ODI MAC drivers. All
  207. ODI drivers must be ODINSUP compatible which means the driver works
  208. with LSL.COM version 1.2 or later.
  209. o HP AdvanceLink for Windows/NewWave (Version A.03.14 or later), HP
  210. AdvanceLink for DOS (Version B.02.21 or later) or compatible third party
  211. product to provide terminal emulation. HP ARPA Services includes a
  212. public domain (Kermit) vt100 terminal emulator.

  216. Other Notes on Software Versions
  217. HP Network Services does not support NFT and VT to a DEC VAX
  218. minicomputer (running Network Services for VAX, HP 50950A).

  227. Installation and Support
  228. Installation:
  229.   HP PC ARPA and Network Services is a customer installable product. The
  230. customer can purchase installation from HP if desired.
  231.  
  232. Hardware Support Services:
  233. Provides customers with standard hardware support for their HP 1000,
  234. HP 3000, HP 9000, and HP PC hardware.
  235.  
  236. Software Support Services:
  237. HP Software Materials Update - Entitles the customer to receive updated
  238. software and documentation for any revisions to the product up to, but
  239. not including, the next upgrade.
  240.  
  241. HP BasicLine Software Support - Provides customer with self-support
  242. through right-to-use updates and access to electronic database.
  243. HP ResponseLine Software Support - Provides all the services of
  244. HP BasicLine Software Support, plus unlimited access to the Response
  245. Center for problem resolution assistance.
  246. HP TeamLine Software Support - Provides all the services of
  247. HP ResponseLine Software Support plus a local account-assigned
  248. HP Service Engineer who will assist the customer with proactive planning
  249. and other support needs.

  251. Network Support Services:
  252. HP WireTest - Verifies the suitability of the customer's existing
  253. twisted-pair cabling for their network. By utilizing sophisticated
  254. tests, which quickly and accurately evaluate existing cabling, the
  255. customer can potentially save a substantial investment that would be
  256. required for rewiring.
  257.  
  258. Network Planning and Design - Provides customers with a comprehensive
  259. network strategy that supports their business objectives. HP Network
  260. consultants analyze the customer's communication requirements and create
  261. a detailed network design based on these requirements.
  262.  
  263. Network Startup - Provides customers with quick implementation of their
  264. network, a simplified service interface, verified network operation, and
  265. assured on-going supportability. Please refer to the HP Network Startup
  266. data sheet for more information.
  267.  
  268. NetAssure - Provides customers with fault isolation and assistance with
  269. problem resolution anywhere on their network. Please refer to the
  270. HP NetAssure data sheet for more information.

  272. HP PCLAN  - Provides Novell customers with a single source
  273. of support for NetWare and HP PC-based local area networks and personal
  274. computers and peripherals attached to the network.
